LL スピーチコンテスト・クラス予選終了

Class-preliminary of LL Speech Contest was over.

先週の土曜からレッスン中に実施してきた「第37回LL スピーチコンテスト・クラス予選」が終了しました。

The class-preliminary for “the 37^th Interclass LL Speech Contest“ which had started last Saturday was over today, on Friday, August 29^th.

 

 

(A)「中高生の部」は、9月7日(日)、5:00-6:30、LLシホヤ新井教室で実施予定です。

“Part for J/H School Students” is going to be held on Sunday, September 7^th, from 5:00 to 6:30 pm at LL Shihoya Arai School.

 

 

(B)「小学生の部」は、10月5日(日)、2:00-4:30、勤研センターで実施致します。スピーチに先立って、可愛い「えいごでコント」を披露いたします。ご期待ください。

And “Parts for Elementary School Students” are going to be held on Sunday, October 5^th, from 2:00 to 4:30 pm at Kin-ken Center. Just before it, cute “Conte in English” is to be performed. Look forward to them, please.

ラズベリーが色づいています。1年に2回も実がなることを知りませんでした。

Raspberries are growing in LL-garden. I first knew the plant bears its fruits twice a year.

 

 

8月26日(火)のPS, A2クラスの生徒たちにちょっぴり振る舞いました。この辺の子どもたちは、市販のお菓子の甘さとは根本的に違っていることを知っています。

LL-students of PS and A2 were able to eat them a little on Tuesday, August 26^th. The children around here know the fundamental difference of sweetness between this raspberry and snacks on the market.

 

 

ところで、もうすぐ「長月(ながつき)」：旧暦の9月ですね。長月は、「夜長月(よながつき)」の略が有力のようです。

BTW, September starts soon. The month was called “Nagatsuki” in the old calendar and the *leading theory is that it is an abbreviation of “Yonaga-tsuki, the long night in the month”.

ヨッシーの先生のお一人、門脇長子様のお誕生日：9月3日がドラエもんの誕生日でもあるってことをユーモア好きの先生からのお手紙で初めて知りました。門脇先生は、小説「浅瀬石川(あせいしかわ)」(文芸社刊)の作者です。

According to Ms. Kadowaki’s latest letter, her birthday of September 3^rd is also Doraemon’s. She is one of my respected teachers and likes humor and also the author of the novel: “Ase-ishikawa” published by Bungei-sha, Co. Ltd.

 

 

門脇先生：85歳、ドラエもん：45歳 (小学館の「よいこ」、「幼稚園」等で1970年1月号から連載開始)、おめでとうございます！

Ms. Kadowaki, congratulations on your eighty-fifth birthday! Doraemon, congratulations on your forty fifth one!

 

 

私はテレビでしか歌舞伎を鑑賞したことがありません。歌舞伎に造詣が深い先生とその話題についてお話しできないことが残念で、申し訳ありません。大好きな故・古今亭志ん生さんの「中村仲蔵」等で、歌舞伎役者の精進ぶりと魅力を想像しています。

I’ve watched Kabuki only through TV. I am sorry not to talk or write about it to her. She *has a detailed knowledge of Kabuki. *The least I can do is to get a picture of Kabuki actors’ world by listening to CDs; one of them is “Nakamura Nakazo” told by the late Kokontei Shinsho, one of my most favorite Rakugo tellers.

公教育に先立ち、LLシホヤ新井教室で「英語劇」、「サマーキャンプ」、「外国人講師レッスン」など精力的に続けてこられたのは、LL神奈川ブロック会を牽引なさった門脇先生と関 脩先生をお手本にしてきたからです。

8月25日(月)早朝、エリーとの散歩の折撮影した「造成中の公園、駐車場」です。左が「新・市民体育館」、右が「新・新井小野外運動場」です。

In the early morning on Monday, August 25^th, while walking with Erie; I took a picture of “a new park with parking lot being built”. The left building is “rebuilt Citizens’ Gym” and the edge of “new Play-ground of Arai E-School” is seen right.

 

 

中央奥に見えるはずの妙高山は、国中を苦しめている暴風雨直撃を防ぐ壁になってくれています。

Mt. Myoko (2,454m) would be able to be seen is preventing against suddenly attaching destructive storms from which have been suffering us all in Japan as a big wall.

 

 
 

8月24日(日)、4:00-5:30 pm、「えいごでコント」：第3回の練習をしました。私が台本に「8月25日(日)」と書いてしまったために、ご迷惑をおかけいたしました。それでも3名が出席してくれました。

We practiced the 3^rd “Conte in English” on Sunday, August 24^th, from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. Because I had misprinted “8/25^th (Sun)” on the script, they became confused; I am sorry. The three performers joined.

 

永年「LL スピーチコンテスト・校内大会」で「英語劇」を上演してきました。が、今年度から「えいごでコント」に方針転換しました。

We have been holding “English Play” at “LL Speech Contest Interclass” for many years. But I *changed my policy: started “Conte in English” instead of that.

*change one’s policy：方針転換する

 

 

理由は、…「大人の発想、お膳立て」が「子どもたちの柔軟な、自発的な発話」を邪魔していると思っているからです。

The main reason is … I’m afraid that “we adults’ ideas or *making preparations” must be disturbing “Kids’ *flexible and spontaneous outputs”

*making preparations：お膳立て  *flexible～：柔軟な　
*spontaneous～：自発的な、任意の

 

 

ご覧の通り、コントには台本がありますが、練習しながら「自然に出てくる発話」をその場で微調整しています。

These contes have their scripts as you see, but Yoshy respects kids’ “spontaneous speeches or outputs” while we are practicing them.

 

 

「あれ、変だな？」、「こう返事をしたら相手はどう言うかな？」、「この動作と台詞の方が、お客さんが笑うんじゃないかな？」…などと楽しみながら練習を重ねています。

“Humm, something is wrong, isn’t it?” “if I say this, how will he/she respond to me?” “I guess this new words might make the audience laugh much more, don’t you agree?” … We’ve been enjoying practicing “Conte in English”.

 

 

英語学習では、「偶々、ことばが英語」なだけです。英会話上達のコツは、「問題意識を楽しみながら高める」ことだと私は確信しています。大人も子供も！

Yoshy believes the *essence of learning English should be based by the fact: “the language is English by chance.” The knack of mastering the command of English must be to understand that “we always need some passions to keep enjoying solving *awareness of the issue”; which we adults and children sure *acquire!

*essence：本質  *awareness of the issue：問題意識 
*acquire～：～を獲得する

 

 

その土台には「躾(しつけ)」が不可欠！近年、「うちの子を叱った」で、学校の先生を叱ったり、教委に苦情を言ったりする親馬鹿が目立つご時勢です。「溺愛」、「私利私欲」、「保身」は、ほどほどにしたいものです。

Needless to say, “good *discipline is *essential!” Recently I hear some *doting parents are apt to scold the teacher once their kids are scolded by the teacher or make a strong complaint to the board of education. “*Blind love”, “*personal greed”, “*self-protection” … We should do in moderation, shall we?

*discipline：躾(しつけ)  *essential：不可欠な  *blind love：溺愛
*personal greed：私利私欲　*self-protection：保身

粟立山崩壊記録冊子

8月20日(水)早朝の「広島土石流災害」に続き、24日(日)には、北海道礼文町も同様の被害に遭っています。写真はNHKより。

After “the disaster in Hiroshima: *avalanche of mud and rocks” occurred in the early morning on Wednesday, August 20^th, another same disaster attacked Rebun-town in Hokkaido on Sunday, 24^th. This picture is from NHK.

「妙高市は雪害を除けば自然災害が少ない」と思っている若い大人たちがおられるのかもしれません。

I’m afraid some young adults may believe that “we have fewer *natural hazards except snow disaster than the other area in Japan.”

*natural hazard：自然災害  *snow disaster：雪害

 

 

実はわずか30年間に、新井地区南部の平丸や上馬場などの地滑り、関川の氾濫、赤倉地区の白田切の土石流などいくつかの災害がありました。

Actually, only *in the past three decades, we had some natural hazards like the landslides at Hiramaru, Kamibaba, etc in the western part of Arai district, the *floods of Seki-river and the avalanche of mud and rocks at Shirotagiri in Akakura district.

この冊子によると、明治35年：1902年5月17日に、当時の矢代村、西野谷地区(現在の妙高市新井地区西野谷)で「土石流」が発生しました。100年間以上ずっと大切に残しおかれている唯一枚の写真です。

According to this booklet, the avalanche of earth and rocks attached Nishinoya in Yashiro Village at that time (present Nishinoya, Arai district, Myoko City) on May 17^th, 1902 (Meiji 35). This only one picture has been very carefully preserved for more than 100 years.

 

 

災害から100年目の2002年(平成14年)、大昔から、そしてこれからもきっとやってくる自然災害を忘れないようにと、この冊子が出来ました。

In 2002, Heisei 14 which was the 100^th year since that hazard; this booklet was published so that we must never forget it forever.

 

 

偶然「見舞いに預かりし覺」に、「新井町・志保屋」の記載があったため、編集者のお一人が、12年前に小生に寄贈して下さったのです。

By chance, this booklet was presented to me twelve years ago because “Shihoya in Arai Town” was written on a page about “Notes of those who had given the *get-well gifts” of it.

*get-well gift：お見舞い品

 

 

「遠望する土石流は煤煙に覆われるごとくで、膨大な樹木を含んだ山津波に、人々は泣き崩れなすすべもなかった。云々。」…被害の詳細をここではとても書けません。

It e.g. reads that “the avalanche of earth and rocks looked soot and smoke covering us and huge mountain wave, tsunami made the people cry only.” … I am not willing to write the detail here.

 

 

「輝け未来」の表題の通り、子孫への警告文も随所に記されています。

There are several warnings written for their *posterity in the booklet, whose title is “Shine Your Future”.

*posterity：子孫 (集合名詞) ⇔ ancestry：先祖、祖先

 

 

例えば、被害の前年、明治34年：「山物採りの人々により、粟立山山頂付近山体北東部に多くの亀裂が確認される。」…など。

E.g. in one year before that disaster, Meiji 34: “lots of cracks were found at the north-eastern part of the top of Awadachi-yama by some people collecting *edible wild plants.” … and so on.

*edible wild plants：食用の野生植物、山菜

 

 

古典の一つと何気なく保存しておいた「輝け未来」を読むにつけ、先人の「子孫への痛々しい思いやり」に胸が熱くなります。

Whenever reading this booklet, “Shine Your Future” I carelessly left on a bookshelf as one of *classical writings, I am moved by the ancestry who must have felt “painful *consideration for their posterity”.

*classical writings：古典の文献  *consideration：思いやり

 

 

日本には「土砂災害危険個所」がない居住区はないことを思い知らされています。

There is no “critical locations of damage from landslide” at our *inhabited areas in Japan; it is warning us.

*inhabited area：居住区

 

 

追記：「粟立山」は、「あわだちやま」か、「あわだてやま」か、濁点不要か、私には分かりません。ご存知の方、お教えくださいませ。

PS: Yoshy has no idea of correct pronunciation of “粟立山”; “Awadachi-yama”, “Awadate-yama” and whether its voiced sound mark is needed or not. Would you e-mail to me if you know?

狭い日本ですので、当地の天候もかなり乱れています。

Since Japan is so small that the weather here is also *disturbed a lot.

8月22日(金)、3:30 pm頃、Rがじゃが芋を掘り起こしていましたら、妙高山の方角に青空、雷、雹(ひょう)、そして数分の短期豪雨が1時間ほど順番に続きました。

On Friday, August 22^nd, around 3:30 pm, just after R finished digging potatoes from LL garden; we saw a blue sky in the direction of Mt. Myoko, thunders, *hailstones then a *localized heavy rain for a few minutes.

*hailstone：雹(ひょう)、霰(あられ)

教室隣の事務所で、雷鳴に怯えるエリーです。

Erie was scared of the claps of thunders in LL Office next to LL Shihoya Arai School.

 

 

さて、本題に：新井地区中心市街地に残っている唯一の板塀だろうと思います。

Well, today’s theme is … Yoshy believes this outward board-wall is probably the last one in the central part of Arai district.

 

 

杉の板を下から重ねています。一見ひ弱に見えますが、換気が良く、100年以上の風雪に耐えています。

The wall was made of many quadrangular boards of cedar, whose tops were piled from the bottom. It is *not as weak as it looks; it is well ventilated and it has been protecting the inhabitant from severe cold wind and snow for over 100 years.

蝉が一休みしやすく、屋根との隙間には雀が巣を作りやすいのです。

It is a good place for cicadas to take a rest. Sparrows are easily able to make their nests at a narrow gap between a roof and the top of this wall.

 

 

中心市街地に残っている「雁木(がんぎ)」がある家です。これも唯一だろうと思います。

This house has its “Gangi or covered alley”, which is also only one remaining in the central part of Arai district, I’m sure.

 

 

雁木は、隣の市、上越市の高田地区が有名です。でも、木造の雁木は、どんどん減っています。この写真は四半世紀前の「一斉除雪」の様子です。良く観ると、その当時でさえ雁木が途切れています。

Takada district of Joetsu City is famous for its covered alleys, however they are rapidly disappearing. This picture was taken more than a quarter-century ago, showing “*a blanket operation of cleaning snow”. You see there is a blank space in it even in those days.

「歩いて買い物」をする人が激減しているからですね。

It is *obvious that the reason is decreasing “the number of walking customers”.

江戸中期から大切にしてきた「秋葉神社」から見た「現在造成中の新しい車道」です。早晩この神社も移転させられるのでしょうね。

The last picture was taken from “Akiha-shrine”, showing “a new road being built now”. Maybe this old shrine will be moved *somewhere else sooner or later.

夏休みの終盤に入りました。良く遊びよく学んでいますか？8月18日(月)～レッスンが再開されます。

Summer holidays are now in the final stage. Though it is true that “All work and no play make Jack and Jill dull kids.” … Are you working hard as well as playing hard? LL ordinary lessons start on Monday, August 18^th after Bon-festival breaks.

 

 

8月17日(日)、「えいごでコント」の出演小学生5名全員が4:00-5:30 pm LLシホヤ新井教室で楽しく練習できました。

The five LL elementary school students who are actors and actresses of “Conte in English” enjoyed practicing the 2^nd drill at LL Shihoya Arai School from 4:00 to 5:30 pm on Sunday, August 17^th.

さて、このメールマガジン執筆者は、多分、「実用英検問題を作成なさっておられるネイティヴ先生」だと思いますので、ヨッシーにとっても、このブログの読者にとっても、英文表現の良いお手本になることでしょう。

Since I’m sure the person who wrote below is one of native “teachers of making questions of Eiken in The Society for Testing English Proficiency, Inc. (STEP)”, this kind of essay would be a good example for practicing writing English for both Yoshy and Yoshy’s Blog-readers.

 

 

August 2014

Every year, toward the peak of summer, cicadas start ＊paying a visit to my garden. When I hear their buzzing songs, I always feel as though the *humidity and heat has doubled.

毎年、真夏に近づくにつれ、蝉たちが私の庭に来始めます。その喧しい声を聞くたびいつも、蒸し暑さが倍増する気がします。

*pay a visit to～：～にやってくる、～を訪問する　
*humidity：湿度、湿気

However, it must have sounded different to Matsuo Basho, one of the greatest icons of Japanese poetry known as haiku, as he wrote, “Shizukasa ya iwa ni shimiiru semi no koe.” (“Up here, a *stillness- the sound of the cicadas *seeps into the *crags” as translated by Arthur Binard.)

しかし、それは、俳句として知られている日本の詩の最も偉大な作家の一人、松尾芭蕉が詠んだ「静かさや岩にしみいる蝉の声」(アーサー・バイナード英訳：ここへ来ると、蝉の鳴き声が岩に沁み込む－というある種の静寂さ)とは違って聞こえていた筈です。

*seep：沁み出る、沁み込む  ＊up here：ここでは
*stillness：静寂　*crag：ごつごつした岩、岩山

 

 

Under the shower of cicadas’ voices, he found himself in the *depth of silence. This poem takes me into the midst of the thick green forest. I can even smell the *scent of the trees around me. I truly *admire his keen sense of *description!

叩きつけられるような蝉の声の下で、芭蕉は自分が静寂の底にいることを自覚しました。私は、この詩によって深緑の森の真っただ中に連れてゆかれます。私を囲む木々の香りを嗅ぐことさえできます。芭蕉の実に鋭い描写力に感動を禁じ得ません。

*depth：深さ、どん底  *scent：香り、香気
*admire～：～を称賛する
*description：記述、描写

 

This poem reminds me of my own experience years ago. I lived *in the vicinity of a school for Korean children, and I *continuously heard announcements from the loud speakers. However, it did not *disturb me at all because I did not understand a word of Korean. I *suppose we can *ignore the existence of something until we find some meaning in it.

この詩は私の昔の体験を思い出させてくれます。私は韓国の子供たちが通う学校の近くに住んでいましたから、拡声器から絶え間なく流れる大音量のアナウンスを耳にしていました。けれども、私は韓国語が理解できませんでしたから全く気になりませんでした。多分、私たちは、意味のない何かに対してはその存在を無視できるのだろうと思います。

*in the vicinity of～：～の近くに (vicinity：近所、付近)
　*continuously：間断なく、連続的に
　*disturb～：～を乱す、妨げる
　*suppose～：多分～だと思う
　*ignore～～を無視する

 

Once we *comprehend our *surroundings better, things *tend to attract our attention. *What if Basho had understood the messages from the cicadas? Would this have *prevented him from *appreciating the *tranquility? If so, would it have prevented him from creating such a poetic *masterpiece? Midsummer is *just around the corner.

私たちは周囲の状況をよりよく理解して初めてその何かに注目出来るのでしょう。もし芭蕉が蝉からのメッセージが分かっていたならどうだったでしょう？心の平穏を愛でることができたでしょうか？そうだとしたら、芭蕉はこのような秀逸な俳句を詠むことができたでしょうか？そろそろ真夏です。

　*what if～：もし～だったら

6，7月に一部のLLシホヤ新井教室クラスとM-PEC講座で一緒にレッスンしてくれたアックン、マックスの母上から絵葉書が届きました。ありがとうございました。

A-kun and Max were very kind enough to have been Yoshy’s ALTs from June to July at the lesson of LL Shihoya Arai School and Myoko Powerful English Club (M-PEC). Again thanks a lot, Rollison Family! The picture-postcard written by their mom safely arrived here on Thursday, August 14^th.

Let me show you only “the stamp and the photo” here; as this is a post card close to private letter, I will introduce her message to LL students and M-PEC members in a near future.

 

 

アックン、マックスが教えて下さったように、ご存じ、テキサス州はアラスカ州に次いで2番目に大きな州です。

As A-kun and Max taught us, you know, State of Texas is the second largest State after State of Alaska.

 

 

わざわざ、お住まいのグレープヴァインから300㎞も離れているアーリントンまで「絵葉書」を求めに行かれたのかしら？

I’m afraid I might have had their parents bother to visit Arlington to buy this picture post-card. It is about 300 meters from their Grapevine City to there.

 

 

「絵葉書」は教材になりますから、ご帰国時に気楽にお願いしてしまいました。

Anyway, “a picture post-card” is able to be a good teaching material for my lessons. I.e. I asked A-kun to send your message by a picture post-card. Excuse me to have had you get troubled.

 

 

写真を見ると、一人のカウボーイが幌馬車の傍で料理をしています。19世紀のテキサスの光景かな？有名な俳優の故ジョン・ウエインを思い出します。

As you see this picture, a cowboy is cooking beside his covered wagon probably on the wild ground of old TX in 19^th century. It makes me remember one of greatest actor, the late Mr. John Wayne.

 

 

“Howdy”は、主にテキサスで良く使われる気さくな挨拶の一つで、「やあ、おい、オッス、調子はどう？」の意味です。

“Howdy!” means “How are you? How’s it? Hi!...” It is a kind of *colloquial greeting in TX.

*colloquial～：口語の～

 

 

LL生徒やM-PEC会員に、「ワールド」と「グローバル」の違いを教えてほしいと時々聞かれます。前者は「世界的な、世界中に」、後者の語源はラテン語の globus = 「球体」ですので、「地球規模の」の意味が土台になっていることが分かります。

Yoshy’s students often ask me the difference between “world” and “global”. The former means “worldwide” and the latter one comes from Latin language, “globus”, which means “sphere”; basically means “globe”.

 

 

デジタルのイーメール、グーグルアース等と飛行機の発達のお陰で世界が日増しに小さくなっています。私が良く警告を発するように、夢や想像力まで小さくなりませんように！

E.g. Thanks to digital application: e-mail, Google Earth, etc and airplanes, our world has become smaller and smaller. I am often warning to my students; I hope my future adults’ dreams and imaginations won’t be smaller as well as that.

お墓参り昨今事情

Current Situation of Visiting Graves

有機肥料しか使っていない小さなLL菜園には、命が充満しています。

A small LL-garden used only *organic fertilizer is now full of various lives.

菜園で、最近よく目にする小動物は、「カナチョロ」(別名：日本カナヘビ、これは3センチくらいの赤ちゃん)、「蝸牛(かたつむり)」、アゲハ蝶、蛾、熊蜂…。

The little animals recently seen there are for example, “a Japanese Grass Lizard” (This one is a 3 cm long baby.), “a snail”, “a swallow-tailed butterfly”, “a moth”, “a carpenter bee”, etc.

 

 

8月12日(火)、俳優のロビン・アダムス氏が他界されたニュースがNHKで流れました。手元の「パッチアダムス」ビデオは、マレーシア英語教師、ヤップ先生が教えて下さいました。心を病む多くの人達に笑いと勇気を与えた稀有な俳優です。映画のように蝶が鬱で悩んでおられたロビンさんの命を守ってくれたらよかったのですが…。ありがとうございました。一ファンとして、氏のご冥福をお祈り申し上げます。

According to NHK News, an actor, Mr. Robin Williams passed away last Tuesday. The video named “Patch Adams” was once introduced by Ms. Yap who is an English teacher in Malaysia. He was an exceptional great actor who gave laugh and encouragement to lots of people in the world. I wish a butterfly, like the movie, would have flown around him because he seemed to have *fallen into depression! … Thank you, Robin. Yoshy would like to say as one of your fans; “*May your soul rest in peace.”

今日8月13日(水)は旧盆です。11日、小雨の中、通常のレッスン前に墓掃除に行ってきました。私には有難迷惑なのですが、この数年間、管理組合さんが除草剤をまいていますので「ミイラになった薄茶色の枯れ草」を、手で引き抜きます。

Today, Wednesday, August 13^th is Bon of the *lunar calendar that’s the festival for the dead. I went cleaning our tomb in sometimes *drizzling before that daily lesson last Wednesday. The management society for this site has sprayed *herbicide onto the land of the site for several years; which is telling the truth, *too much of a good thing for me. I *uprooted the “dried-up grass. They had already turned into light-brown colored mummies”.

先祖の霊魂(私は信じていません。)が墓石の下で除草剤を浴びている姿を想像するのもいやだなぁと感じます。この墓地の凡そ300基の持ち主は、今年も又、私も含めて何も言わず、お坊さんに「管理費：3,000円」を納めます。…不一。

The ancestors’ souls, Yoshy never believe the existence of soul, must have been drenched with herbicide under the ground. I hate to imagine that! Around 300 owners of the tomb including me are to pay a priest on behalf of that society “3,000 yen as the management fee” without saying something. Hum… How do you think?

 

 

この十年間でこの墓地は奇怪な光景になっています。明治後半に私の祖父が再建してくれた当家の墓石は約十年前まではどこにもあったクラシックな形です。

This grave-site has become to be *odd-looking for a decade. Our family’s *gravestone was rebuilt by my late grandfather *in the late Meiji period. Its shape had been an ordinary one until about a decade ago. Now ours became very rare and classic,

当時は周りがほとんど同じ墓石でしたので、縁者の墓石を探すのには盆提灯で墓碑を確認するのが一苦労でもあり、又、挨拶を交わしながら見つけた時の小さな喜びでもありました。

Those days, the shape of gravestones in the site was almost same; so it was rather difficult to find our relatives’ by using a lantern, but we were happy to find them exchanging greetings.

 

 

今は景観バランス感覚が全くと言っていいほど、なし。門徒(浄土真宗信者？？)同士の挨拶も聞こえず、亡者の行進の如し。ポータブルラジカセを墓前に据えて「CDのお経」を大音量で流す墓主もいます。泉下の魂が自慢話をするのでしょうか？(笑) 超高層ビルの中にちょこんと威厳を保っている当家の墓石に誇りを感じます。

Recently, I think there is *next to no harmony of the site. We can hardly hear greetings among the same member of Monto-school of Buddhism at all; they look like marching of the dead. Some owners of the gravesite bring CD radio cassette recorders, putting them before their graves and playing “O-kyo, Buddhism sutras on CD” *with loud volume. Are the souls under the grand enjoying their boastful chatting, aren’t they? – It maybe so. - :-)

I’m proud of our gravestone which *quietly stands in a dignified attitude among still growing *skyscrapers.

こんな素朴な問題意識にカッカしないで反論できる日本人が増えてほしいと願いつつ、LLシホヤ新井教室とM-PEC活動をしています。

I am always hoping that such more sophisticated Japanese will increase as could reply to this kind of question not getting upset; I am enjoying my lessons of LL Shihoya Arai School and Myoko Powerful English Club (M-PEC).

 

 

ともかく、そこに集う人たちは一時的にせよ、全員が善男善女です。「短気は損気。」C. K. 先生の口ぐせ、「良い加減に参りましょう。」

Anyway, all of them in there are *pious men and women though some are temporally. “A short temper will cost you.” Ms. C. K. usually tells me to “Do everything better, not do it best!”

ヨッシーの骨はどうするか、ですって？…今のお墓に入れていただければ最高。葬式無用。－　これは遺言です。

Well, how does my bones? … It’s enough to have them put into this grave and no need to do my funeral ceremony, which are my dying words.

8月9日(土)朝のフェーン現象です。妙高山が頑張ってくれて、今回の台風11号も直撃しませんでした。

We could see a blue Mt. Myoko in the air of foehn on last Saturday’s morning. Thanks to Mt. Myoko and its range, we had no damage from Typhoon 11.

 

 

その日は、「とんぼ玉特別講座最終日」と「M-PEC月例講座：YEA」がありました。先にYEAのご報告を。

August 9^th was the date when “Special Event of Making Glass-beads” was over and “Monthly YEA (Yoshy’s English Activity) of M-PEC” was held. First, let me write the report of YEA below.

 

 

会話力成就の最終目標は「ディベーティング」だと私は考えていますが、外国人と討論出来るには、英検準1級レベル以上でないと無理です。現在のM-PECではまだ無理です。ましてやLLシホヤ新井教室の子どもたちでは「英語嫌い」を作るだけです。

Yoshy believes the *attainment target of command of English conversation should be “*Debating”, but it needs the proficiency around the pre-1^st level and over of Eiken, English Testing. It’s impossible for us M-PEC members to do such a high leveled “Debating” yet, let alone the kids of LL Shihoya Arai School. If we tried it, “many kids who hate learning English” would be more.

長年続けてきた「英語劇」も良い指導法なのですが、近年「自分さえ目立てばよい。間違って恥をかいたので退会する、退校する」…会員や生徒が目立ちます。そこで2004年度から、両者に、「えいごでコント」を導入しています。

“Performing English Drama” has been held for many years; I think it is a good way of teaching English conversation; but recently such members and students rapidly appear as think in their minds, “*I care only about myself. Because I embarrassed myself by my mistakes, I will *withdraw from M-PEC or LL Shihoya Arai School.” So I decided to start “Conte in English” in both activities of M-PEC and LL Shihoya Arai School in the year of 2014.

*I care only about myself.：自分さえよければ良い。 
*withdraw from～：～を辞する

 

 

「えいごでコント」では、討論ができなくても、「対話を通してなんとか笑える話」を作れば良いのです。極端に言えば、学習した台詞を忘れても、「ジェスチャーやオノマトペ」で何とか進行できるのです。

If they are not able to debate, in “Conte in English”; all they need to do is to “try to make a short funny story through a *dialogue”, that’s enough. I.e. *in an extreme case, even if one forgot one’s lines, the dialogue goes with only “jesters and *onomatopoeias”

*dialogue：対話  *in an extreme case：極論を言えば 
*onomatopoeia：擬音、擬音語

 

 

「英語ソング」、「英語スピーチコンテスト」、「英語劇」…色々な成果発表の形があります。それはそれで楽しめば良いのですが、これらは、他者：他人様が考えた「感情や意見」なのです。小さくなってゆく地球規模での英語力に求められているものは、「他人様との和を保ちながら、自分の感情と意見を伝える」英語力だと私は考え、挑戦を開始しています。

There are lots of ways of *demonstrating the result of our learning English like “English Song”, “English Speech Contest”, “English Play”, etc. These are of course good ways to enjoy learning English, but these English are from others’ “feelings or opinions”. The world is becoming smaller and smaller. I think that the command of English we now need the most *on a global scale is “to be able to tell one’s own feeling and idea in friendship atmosphere”, which is the reason I started trying “Conte in English”.

予定通り、今日、8月9日(日)、7:00-9:00 am at LLシホヤ新井教室：M-PEC月例講座 (2007年度より88回目！) を準備してお待ち申し上げます。中高生以上、年齢不問で資料代は500円 only.

 On schedule, YEA (Yoshy's English Activity) of M-PEC is going to be held today, on Sunday, August 9th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. (It will be the 88th YEA counted from the year of 2007.) YEA is available to all ages from J/S high school students. A material fee is 500 yen.

 

学習の主テーマ予定： Learning Themes Planned

 

(1) 「えいごでコント」の台詞を考えて若さを保とう！

(2) 「NHK：とっさの一言」より、「(レストランで) "私にも同じものをください."」など。

(3) イーメール手紙の書き方：(前回の すてきなTX-kidsからのメールへの返信を英文で挑戦.)

(4) その他、英語の歌を練習して、カラオケで上手に歌えますように!

 

Main themes this time:

(1) Let us keep young by making lines on the pictures of "Conte in English"!

(2) "Prompt Words from DVD of NHK"

(3) How to write e-mail: let us try to make our messages to TX kids who were our nice ALTs.

(4) The others: Singing Songs so that we could sing it well at karaoke-room, etc.
