This poor translation into English is for both brushing up Yoshy’s proficiency and telling updates to my foreign friends. Yoshy’s several foreign friends are always checking this blog; wrong expressions found, an article of “Correction” has been uploaded here.

英文中、英検2級レベル以上の語彙や表現には、* (星印)で注釈をつけています。

In this blog, Yoshy adds * (asterisk) at the vocabulary and expressions whose level are Eiken 2nd and over, and writes its explanation.

「えっ、この英文どこが変なの?」:Japanized English?

Let’s try to find queer or wrong expressions we Japanese easily mistake, shall we?

従前の学校英語での時制学習では、たいてい現在形からでした。「これはペンですか?」『見てわからないのかな?』と思いながらも、国の指導指針に従順だったのでは? …

This is one scene of the game of “Sentence-cards: past forms” in PD-class.

Until recently, I’m afraid, most junior high school students in Japan started learning English tense in their public school from present forms. “Is this a pen?” … Though they thought in mind, ‘Doesn’t my teacher know a pen?’; they would strangely obeyed their teachers, wouldn’t they?...

You’re using past forms when writing “a diary about my summer holidays”, talking about “TV-programs you watched”, aren’t you?

004 500 20150820 A4 He is swimming

A4クラスでは、絵カードを使って、例えば、Yoshyが、「泳ぐ」⇒ 生徒が、「私は泳いでいました。」⇒ Yoshyが、「どこで?」⇒ 生徒が、「プールで」のように、対話が3往復できると1点!

In a lesson of A4-class, e.g. by using picture-cards; Yoshy’s Q-1: “Find the card of the verb, swim!” – Students’ A-1: “I was swimming.” – Y’s Q-2: “Where were you swimming?” – S’s Q-2: “I was swimming in a swimming pool,” etc. … If he/she could communicate three-ways, he/she could get one point!

All of the five voices were flying past each other at the same time, which helped us better understand the rule of “usage of Be-verbs + lots of general verbs.”

レッスン終了後、樗沢 仁先生のご体験の一部を英語で説明した時、難しい内容なのに、聞き取りやすくなっていましたね。

Just after their lesson, I briefly explained Dr. Bunazawa’s Pacific-war experience in front of the latest Blog on PC; they were able to understand better than the beginning, though the story was a little difficult for A4-class.

Dr. Bunazawa was around ten years old at that time. …

I hope LL J/S high school students will get interested in “the stories of history-tellers” which wouldn’t be told in school much more.

And *recognition of history is part of learning English, I believe.

*recognition [rèkəgníʃən]:認識

「ぼくのパソコン、調子が悪いんです。」は、“My PC is in bad condition.”  --- ???

答え:My PC doesn’t work well.

“in bad condition” = 「調子が悪い」は、機械、装置などに使うと、「見た目にオンボロ」に聞こえやすいのです。

機械や装置の不具合は、ある部品の動作が悪いのであって、そのもの全体の不具合ではないのですから、「このおもちゃ、良く動かない」= This toy doesn’t work well. …のように言いましょう。
