This poor translation into English is for both brushing up Yoshy’s proficiency and telling updates to my foreign friends. Yoshy’s several foreign friends are always checking this blog; wrong expressions found, an article of “Correction” has been uploaded here.

英文中、英検2級レベル以上の語彙や表現には、* (星印)で注釈をつけています。

In this blog, Yoshy adds * (asterisk) at the vocabulary and expressions whose level are Eiken 2nd and over, and writes its explanation.

“The Wails of a Tree” from Ms. Yamashita’s Poems

Last Wednesday, September 2nd, one of R’s friends presented us a few big “marronier or horse chestnuts”. Those reminded me that he who was a leader of a kid-gang taught us how to eat them. But now I can’t remember at all. So you can see this one at the bottom of LL-stairs.

I’ve been using geta, a pair of Japanese wooden clogs especially during walking with Erie since this early summer. It’s so good for my health that I never fly the face of man. As it is wholly made of kiri: paulownia wood, I’ve used it very carefully; but to be worn out can’t be helped. Recently I did attach myself long and thick supports on them.

This picture is Lawn-park nearby at the west of LL Shihoya Arai School taken of last Thursday, 3rd. The tall tree by *Accession Monument of Emperor Taisho is “Totoro’s Tree: a chinquapin (?)” which was recently pruned off, which reminded me of one of Poetess, Ms. Yamashita’s poems: “The Wails of a Tree.” With permission from her, I translated this poem into Japanese.

Once we had an excellent s/h school LL boy student, M in LL Shihoya Arai School. When he had to make his original essay for his speech in LL Speech Contest, he used a translation software then gave me that. – I scolded him of course. But ironically he passed Tokyo University entrance examination. “We pruned off because we’ll have to clean leaves before winter.” Vs. “I’ve got great power to write my good English essay thanks to such a convenient PC software!”… How do you think?

山下様の詩を英訳するたび、「言葉に宿る感性」に気が付かされます。実用英語ばかり学び続けていたら、私の老後は、「教養に欠ける唯の英語使い」になっていることでしょう。- LL中高生にもこのことを伝えたいけれど、スマホとにらめっこのご時勢では

Whenever I’m in the work of translating her poems, I’m able to *perceive that “Words *keep something sensitive to themselves.” If I kept learning only communicative English, I would be “just a man who is only able to use it without culture” in my older age. Although I’d like to tell this to my LL s/h school students, in such days as they’d like to use smartphones more than reading books…

I’m afraid fewer speakers than I expected will join this LL Speech Contest Interclass on Sunday, September 6th.

The Wails of a Tree

The stream of time is…

My age is telling me what it is.

After just only standing here for a long time,

After just only watching many things;

Now I feel the time going by faster than before in recent years.

Just as long winter is going,

As if I was craving for spring,

I am rushed into wearing pale-pink flowers.

きれいね と言ってくれるのです

Passers-by watching me in full bloom

Sure say to me, “How lovely!”

My scattering petals in the wind look nice,

As well as light-green young leaves of mine.

Lots of caterpillars in summer make me worry

They also do passers-by.

In autumn, my clothes glow red and yellow, and…

They shine in their fatal hour; but…

After rustling on a concrete path,

They come to only refuse themselves in the end.

隣人に申し訳ないから と

My family begins gathering my leaves at first -

Feels sorry to their neighbors …

Lots of limbs of mine were lopped off - at last…

As soon as the balance of natural circulation is lost,

Someone among us must fall a victim…

I knew who it was.

「エリーには少しばかりのプライドがあった。」は、“Erie had pride a little.”
--- ???

答え:Erie had a little pride.

多分、I can ski a little. (少しはスキーができます.)とか、He can speak English a little. (少し英語を話せます.) …のように、文を修飾する副詞として、応用しやすいのだろうと思います。

have の目的語:持っている対象』が、much (たくさん)a little (少し)little (ほとんどなし)…であって、文修飾としての “a little” は不自然ですね。R has much money. (大金を持っています.) のように、 a little prideを『持っている』のです。
