「えっ、この英文どこが変なの?」:Japanized English?

Let’s try to find queer or wrong expressions we Japanese easily mistake, shall we?

「蜘蛛(クモ)は益虫です。」は、“The spiders are beneficial insects.”  --- ???

A Set of Lacquer Ware of Our Family

I knew a part of the *embankment of Kinugawa-river in Joso City, Ibaragi prefecture was collapsed on Thursday, September 10th and rescue operations have still been done. I wish all the missing would be safe!

Mt. Myoko is in the middle of this picture which was shot on Friday morning, September 11th. Since it is worth being called “Reiho, a *sacred mountain”, it always becomes a wall against typhoons.

*sacred [séɪkrɪd](a) 神聖な

Just after typhoons, Erie and I were able to walk the Cherry-path under a clear autumn sky.

05 500 20150906 漆菓子器一式

普段使うことがない、我が家の「漆塗りの菓子器」です。96()の「LL スピーチコンテスト校内大会」で、親御様と発表者たちにクッキーを入れてお見せしました。

This is a set of “lacquered cake box with plates” in our family, which has rarely been used. I used it when serving cookies to my students and their parents at LL Speech Contest Interclass held last Sunday, September 6th.

My grandparents bought it in the early Showa period. The selling agency is, as this leaflet reads, “Kin-to Co. Ltd.” In Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

The letter of “City of Tokyo” is printed on it. According to Wikipedia, their first ancestor must have lived in the time of Tensho-era when Toyotomi Hideyoshi was *exerting his power. Please click the site above and the foundation agency is available to read in the explanation about “Kiya.”

This beautiful “lacquer tree in fall” is also from Wikipedia.

09 500 20150910 板書:verbs-tensees

閑話休題。910()A4クラスでの板書:「be動詞の現在形は?」- am, is areで~す。」―「では、comeの現在形は?」- come, came, comeだから、えーっと、come!」―「もう一つあるよ。」-「???

Changing the topic, I wrote this on the blackboard during A4-lesson on last Thursday, September 10th. I asked them, “What is the present form of be-verbs?” – “They are ‘am, is and are’!” / “Then, What about ‘come’?” – “Well, ‘come-came-come, let’s see… it’s ‘come’!’” – “That’s correct. But there’s another one.” – “???”

「蜘蛛(クモ)は益虫です。」は、“The spiders are beneficial insects.”  --- ???

答え:Spiders are beneficial insects.

私もよく間違えます。『ぶきみな (creepy) 昆虫だぞー!』と思って、 “the” をつけたくなりますよね。「クモなら大概、益虫」なら、the は不要です。…「犬が好きです。」:I like dogs. のように。ただし、…

LL菜園の中のクモは益虫です。」は、『特定の場所のクモ』なので、 The spiders in LL-garden.”のように、theが必要です。

ところで、LL生徒に聞くと、「クモは薄気味悪い (spooky) から嫌い!」が大多数ですが、クモは野菜にたかる害虫を食べてくれますし、写真の、大きな「地蜘蛛(かな?)」ともなると、ゴキブリまで食べるそうですよ。(from「自然大博物館」:小学館)

This poor translation into English is for both brushing up Yoshy’s proficiency and telling updates to my foreign friends. Yoshy’s several foreign friends are always checking this blog; wrong expressions found, an article of “Correction” has been uploaded here.

英文中、英検2級レベル以上の語彙や表現には、* (星印)で注釈をつけています。

In this blog, Yoshy adds * (asterisk) at the vocabulary and expressions whose level are Eiken 2nd and over, and writes its explanation.
