We had a clear autumn sky on Saturday, October 3rd. I saw an athletic meet of a nursery school being held far away from this Lawn-park.

Since I’m sure the person who wrote below is one of “the teachers making questions of Eiken in The Society for Testing English Proficiency, Inc. (STEP)”, this kind of essay would be a good example for practicing writing English for both Yoshy and Yoshy’s Blog-readers. Yoshy’s translation and notes are attached under every paragraph.

03 500 Erie is boring

October 2015

I knew I had to stay alert and pay attention to what the speaker was saying, but my *eyelids got heavier, and finally, I *gave in to my *drowsiness. When I *came to, I couldn’t tell how long I had been out or how much I had missed.

*eyelid [άɪlìd]:瞼(まぶた)  *give in to~:~に負ける、降参する / 提出する  *drowsiness [dráʊzinəs]:眠気  *come to(vi) 正気づく

All this occurred while I was in a study session recently. Have you ever had such an experience? I myself have had many of these happenings, especially in my schooldays. I was on a school basketball team, and I put almost all my energy into the practices, which made me *doze off during class many times. Interestingly, however, I did not get sleepy in all the lessons. I could not stay focused in certain classes only, so I *attributed it to boring content and uninteresting subjects.

*doze [dóʊz](vi) off 思わず転寝(うたたね)する  *attribute [ətríbjuːt] A to BABの所為にする

Later, I started to think about things from a different perspective, such as the time when I brought my children to a classical music concert. As I had expected, they nodded off soon after the show started. However, when they recognized some *tunes they knew, they promptly woke up and listened eagerly. Since then, I began to let them hear some of the melodies from the program before taking them to a concert. And it has never failed to work! They get excited every time they come across familiar *themes, and now they all love to go to concert halls.

I suppose we all get bored and dozy when we cannot *digest the information offered to us. We become *drowsy probably because we start to lose our *grasp of the subject, and our brains give up *functioning.

*digest [dɑɪdʒést, dɪ](vt) 消化する、かみしめる、会得する  *drowsy [drάʊzi](a) 眠気を誘う、眠い  *grasp [grˈæsp](n) 統御、把握、支配  *functioning [fˈʌŋ(k)ʃən-]:機能

Tomorrow, I am planning to go to a violin *recital. I hope I will recognize some pieces so I can stay awake throughout the concert.

Best regards,

I have lots of cleaning.”  --- ???

答え:I have lots of laundry to do.

This poor translation into English is for both brushing up Yoshy’s proficiency and telling updates to my foreign friends. Yoshy’s several foreign friends are always checking this blog; wrong expressions found, an article of “Correction” has been uploaded here.

In this blog, Yoshy adds * (asterisk) at the vocabulary and expressions whose level are Eiken 2nd and over, and writes its explanation.
