Japanized English?

I’ve got lots of “special and interesting expressions some students and I used once”, which I’ve made a note of in my daily LL-lessons for more than forty years.

Let’s try to find queer or wrong expressions we Japanese easily mistake, shall we?

I bet Imori-pond is full of visitors about now during the consecutive holidays. On Saturday, July 2nd, I dropped at there with Erie. There were few visitors. We were able to *monopolize the beautiful sceneries.

*monopolize [mənάpəlὰɪz](vt) 独占する

We saw a wild duck floating between skunk cabbage.

Thanks to this painted map, we can easily understand *sommas, outer rims of Mt. Myoko.

Since I’m sure the person who wrote below is one of “the teachers making questions of Eiken in The Society for Testing English Proficiency, Inc. (STEP)”, this kind of essay would be a good example for practicing writing English for both Yoshy and Yoshy’s Blog-readers. Yoshy’s translation and notes are attached under every paragraph.

03a 300 starry sky

“Are we going to have a *starry sky tonight?”
I always ask myself this question on July 7, the day of the Star Festival, because it is believed that it is the only night the two lovers in the heavens, Orihime and Hikoboshi, can go across the *celestial river to meet each other, but only if the sky is clear. However, my wish has hardly ever been fulfilled. It is often cloudy on this day, if not rainy.

*starry [stάːri](a) 星の多い、星形の、ピカピカ光る  *celestial [səléstʃəl](a) 天の、天国のような、神々しい

03b 450 Lunar Calendar

The Star Festival used to be held on the 7th night of the 7th month of the *lunar calendar. When Japan started using the *Gregorian calendar in the Meiji Era, people in Tokyo continued to celebrate the Star Festival on the same date on the new calendar, which was in the midst of the rainy season.

*lunar [lúːnɚ](a) 月の、月の作用による  *Gregorian [grɪgˈɔːriən](a) グレゴリオ暦の

The weather data of the past 30 years show that the probability of a clear night sky on the 7th of July in Tokyo is a mere 26%, while on the 7th night of the 7th month of the lunar calendar, it is about 53%.

As the old calendar follows the lunar cycle, on the same date every year, we can expect the moon in the same shape in the same direction at around the same time. This means that from Tokyo on the 7th night of the 7th month of the old calendar, we can see a thin crescent moon that sets about midnight. After that, we can see the stars clearly against the moonless sky.

On the contrary, even when it is clear on the night of July 7 of the solar calendar, the *intensity of the moonlight varies. If a full moon is shining brightly, we cannot *perceive the stars *distinctly, let alone the Milky Way.

03c 450 magoie-bridge

This year, I will again be looking up at the sky, hoping that the *odds will be in our favor.

*torrential [tɔːrénʃəl](a) 激流の、激しい

01b 400 torrential rain

Kanto region was attacked by the torrential rain.

This poor translation into English is for both brushing up Yoshy’s proficiency and telling updates to my foreign friends. Yoshy’s several foreign friends are always checking this blog; wrong expressions found, an article of “Correction” has been uploaded here.

In this blog, Yoshy adds * (asterisk) at the vocabulary and expressions whose level are Eiken 2nd and over, and writes its explanation.
