ひとり言:Yoshy’s Soliloquy

When I asked to my elementary school students, “what day December 25th is?” - They quickly answered, “It’s Christmas Day, Jesus Christ’s birthday.” … But, asking, “What day is April 8th?” – “???” … I taught them, “its Buddha’s birthday.” – “… (No response!)”: Even s-h school ones.

I wrote about “Kyoduka-yama Hill” in the previous blog; when I was in my childhood, my grandmother used to take my brother and me to see cherry blossoms there on April 8th or on weekends before or after the date. At the northern edge of the field, there was “Shaka-do: Temple” which doesn’t exist now. Many *pious people regardless ages or gender used to poured “Ama-cha: hydrangea tea” on the head of “The Statue of Standing Baby Buddha saying ‘I am alone throughout universe’” with a ladle. Poring Ama-cha means a new born baby’s first bath. A *bonze wearing a (Buddhist priest's) stole gave us amedama, candies.

*pious [pάɪəs](a) 敬虔な、信心深い  *bonze [bάnz](cn) 坊さん (日本語から英語になった)

Dear Mr. Bonzes and School teachers, you’d better tell something basic about Buddhism as a culture to children. I’m afraid our future adults might be made fun of by foreign people.
