Description (From Wikipedia): An amabie appeared in Higo Province (Kumamoto Prefecture) according to legend, around the middle of the fourth month, in the year Kōka-3 (mid-May 1846) in the Edo period. A glowing object had been spotted in the sea, almost on a nightly basis. The town's official went to the coast to investigate and witnessed the amabie. According to the sketch made by this official, it had long hair, a mouth like bird's bill, was covered in scales from the neck down and three-legged. Addressing the official, it identified itself as an amabie and told him that it lived in the open sea. It went on to deliver a *prophecy: "Good harvest will continue for six years from the current year; if disease spreads, draw a picture of me and show the picture of me to those who fall ill and they will be cured." Afterward, it returned to the sea. The story was printed in the kawaraban (woodblock-printed bulletins), where its portrait was printed, and this is how the story *disseminated in Japan.

I knew that COVID-19 vaccination started last Wednesday, Feb 17 in Japan, too. Around 40,000 healthcare essential workers across Japan are the first group for the vaccination, the next one is for the aged (65 years old or more) to be done in April. BTW, because my age is Showa-25 every year like Sazae-san’s family and ever young 5 y-o Chiko-chan, Phoenix, etc. only God knows the day of mine. Probably in the far future.

(A): What is Sin?

Language and culture study is like *doing a very large puzzle. There are a lot of different areas to work on before we can see the whole picture of the Pwo KaRen world view. At this stage I am working on different areas that still need more work. One tool we use is interviews. In a casual setting we ask questions and listen to the answers. This helps us to understand what they believe about things and we learn more language in its natural context.

Here is an idea of what an interview would look like.

Language helper: Sin is breaking the five precepts taught by Buddha. Don't steal, don't take life, don't commit adultery, don't tell lies and don't drink alcohol.  Killing in self defense would not be a sin and killing animals to eat is O.K. Killing animals needlessly would be a sin.

(C): Well, you get the idea. When the day comes that I can write up teaching lessons and teach or do Bible translation, I will know that when I use the word "sin", their understanding of sin is very different from what God has to say about sin. I can't just use the word for sin that I have learned and expect it to have the same meaning that I think it has. 

 

 

さて、あなたは、ここまでお読みになると、何か引っかかるのでは？― 教えを書き、聖書の翻訳をしたり、教えたりできる日が来ると、私が「罪」という言葉を使う場合、彼ら(ポー・カレン族の人達) が抱く罪の理解は、神(キリスト教の)が罪について言わなければならないこととは非常に異なることがわかります. 私が学んだ「罪」という言葉をただ使うことはできず、私が思っているのと同じ意味を持つことを期待することはできません.

(D): Please pray for me in this process of "filling in the blank spots" on the puzzle. Pray for *perseverance in this important job. Pray for helpful people that will give me a clear insight into their beliefs. Pray that God would lead me to investigate the areas that are important for clearly communicating the message that He has for these people. Pray that this time of talking about these things will open up opportunities and interest for the day when I can teach what God has to say about sin and how it is against God and separates all men, including the Pwo KaRen from Him.  How God loves man so much that He made a way of salvation that we can be freed from the penalty of sin and can be in a relationship with Him.

Language Check and Other Happenings

Sometime in the next month I will be having another language check.  My consultant is waiting for some things to come together before he can plan a date, but it should be the end of January or February.  Please be in prayer for that.  Also in February we are going to Chiang Mai for a Home School Conference.  It will be a busy time, but should be a good time of help and learning for both Wendy and the children. Megan is going to be doing Iowa Achievement Tests and I have been asked to teach a couple of sessions. I will be teaching a main session on the subject of Faith and a workshop on *Third Culture Kids http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_culture_kid .  Pray for me as I prepare for these sessions and for the family that it will be a good and profitable time.

Third culture kids (TCK) or third culture individuals (TCI) are people who were raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of their country of nationality, and also live in a different environment during a significant part of their child development years. They typically are exposed to a greater volume and variety of cultural influences than those who grow up in one particular cultural setting. The term applies to both adults and children, as the term "kid" refers to the individual's formative or developmental years. However, for clarification, sometimes the term adult third culture kid (ATCK) is used.

(F): Our home assignment plans are coming together. We still have not bought the plane tickets, but are planning to fly to England around the 26th of March.  We will spend most of our three months traveling, visiting friends and relatives and speaking at meetings in England and Ireland with some short visits to Scotland and Wales.  We plan to return to Thailand around the beginning of July. We plan to visit the US and Canada in 2013.

45年間以上に渡ってLLシホヤ新井教室、M-PEC講座等で書きとめておいた「LL生徒や私が間違えた表現」をご一緒に考えましょう。

I’ve got lots of “special and interesting expressions some students and I used once”, which I’ve made a note of in my daily LL-lessons for more than forty-five years. Let’s try to find queer or wrong expressions we Japanese easily mistake, shall we?

 

「2021年度LL新入生第1号は、5歳男児です.」は、

“The first new LL student in the year of 2021 is a five years old boy.”  --- ???

∵

“a”と、“boy”の間には、形容詞 (又は相当語句)しか入ることが出来ませんので.

∴

“five-year-old”は、”boy”を修飾する形容詞相当語句です.

ニュースや口語記述文では、「５歳男児：“5 y-o boy”」のような記述が多く見受けられます.
